The Federal Solar Tax Credit Extends to Battery Storage Installations Too

With the passing of the 1.4 Trillion dollar spending bill by the government in January came an extension of the Federal solar tax credit of 26% through 2022. It was previously set to decrease to 22% in 2021. With the new bill, the Federal solar tax credit will now decrease to 22% in 2023 and will be completely eliminated for residential customers in 2024. Commercial customers will receive a 10% Federal tax credit in 2024. This solar tax credit also applies to battery storage systems and can lead to significant savings.

There are over 1.3 million solar systems in California. Of those 1.3 million solar systems, only 30,000 have battery storage systems installed. The extension of the Federal solar tax credit provides a great opportunity for homeowners to have battery systems installed alongside their solar systems over the next couple of years to ensure extra savings and to keep the lights on when the grid goes down.
